Made for my eyes

Between his work and his hobby, Brian Cook is a full-time creator. The digital world is constantly changing and evolving and, as a producer, Brian enjoys the challenge that creates for him and his work. But as a hobbyist woodworker, he also gets to create lasting, physical pieces of art and furniture using time-honored techniques. Regardless of what he’s working on, Brian pores over the details of each project and takes a lot of pride in seeing the final product. Discover Brian’s full story and the Alcon products he trusts to help him keep going strong.

Sitting down with Brian, we had some time to ask him a few questions about the importance of his eyes to the work he does.

What do you do for a hobby?

I’m building a lot of furniture lately. In the past, I’ve done a lot of hands-on projects. I’ve helped build out the insides of vans, I’ve made skateboards. I like making furniture now. It’s detailed work that both has to look great and do a job. It’s like my digital designs—aesthetically pleasing and hardworking.

How important to you is it that your eyes are comfortable throughout the day?

I need my eyes to go all day long. On some days I can be on the computer for a full day and then later I’m in the workshop for several hours. Everything I do requires attention to detail. If my eyes start to burn or feel gritty in front of the computer, I need to take care of that right away. At other times, when working in the garage, my eyes itch from allergens in the air. Without having comfortable eyes all day, my work would be compromised.

What’s your favorite part of furniture making and woodworking?

I love the permanence of it. The digital work that I do all day, while it’s great, most of it only exists in the world for a short while, say eight weeks to eight months. A project I make for a friend, or something that is commissioned, that’s permanent. Those pieces can last a lifetime. And to think of someone enjoying something I made? That’s why I do it.

What else do you enjoy doing?

So many things. I really live in an artsy house. I paint, my kiddos paint—I work as a designer. I love to surf and sea kayak. I just like living life as fully as I can.
